Abstract
ABSTRACT
In this study, a biocompatible magnetic nanosorbent was synthesized to adsorb the drug citalopram. The oat bran, as a natural carbon substrate, was enriched with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and functionalized with β-cyclodextrin. The simultaneous presence of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and β-cyclodextrin enabled easy separation of the nanosorbent using a magnet, while increasing the surface area to volume, surface active sites, and consequently the adsorption capacity. The parameters affecting the adsorption efficiency, including pH, salt effect, temperature, and washing solvent, were optimized; under optimal conditions, the highest adsorption percentage of 89% was obtained with an maximum adsorption capacity of 302.1 mg/g. A calibration curve was prepared for drug concentrations between 2 and 600 μM with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.5 μM. The study of real samples also confirmed the efficiency of this adsorbent and method in the measurement of citalopram in complex matrices with a recovery percentage of close to 99%.
