Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have attracted large attention due to their easy fabrication, low cost and high conversion efficiency. In contrast to the conventional systems where the semiconductor assume both the task of light absorption and charge carrier transport the two functions are separated here. Light is absorbed by a sensitizer, which is anchored to the surface of a wide band semiconductor. This article discusses principle operation of this class of solar cell and new concepts and trends for solar cell development. As the representative of the solar cells of the third generation, the progress and challenges of dye sensitized solar cell was also reviewed.
